A test for measuring and analyzing cutting vibrations in face milling is introduced. The analysis of forced and chatter vibrations are made according to the observation and analysis of the microroughness of probe workpiece surface, high frequency corrugations on chip surface as well as the vibration measured at cutting point of milling machine. Test results show that, the forced cutting vibrations become stronger with the increase of cutting speed, feed and cutting depth, whereas the chatter vibrations become more diffcult to happen with the increase of cutting speed and feed and with the decrease of cutting depth, which coincides with the theoretical analysis and the experimental results from other investigaters. The work presented in the paper points the direction of a proper choice of cutting parameters for suppressing face milling vibrations.
