All these alike questions have often puzzled some learners of English.To reveal the nature of these puzzles, this paper attempts to give a brief introduction to some ideas in applied linguistics which have long influenced the teaching and learning of English as a foreign language, and to the realization of these ideas in teaching materials and methods.After presenting some guestions about the nature of language and the process of language learning, this paper analyses the advantages and disadvantages of the various alternative answers to them. This is an article probing the way of using the theory of second language methodology which is continually progressing in the world to better our ESL teaching.

Based on her experience in Higher mathematics teaching, the author states her viewpoints concerning how to decide on the focal points in the textbook, how to stimulate the students' conscientiousness in Learning, how to tackle new problems based on the students' present knowledge, as well as how to combine the training of calculating strategies with up-to-date medium.
