Using tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP) supported on poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (50—150 mesh) as stationary phase, and mineral acids of different concentrations or water as mobile phase, it is possible to separate thorium, scandium and heavy lanthanons from one another. The main results are summarized as follows: With the results found above, a two-elution procedure is devised, with which thorium, scandium and heavy lanthanons can be separated from one another. Using 4N nitric acid as eluent first, scandium and heavy lanthanons are washed out from the column, while thorium remained. The latter can be then eluted with water. The nitric acid eluate is extracted with carbon tetrachloride for removal of TBP and evaporated to dryness. Then, add perchloric acid and heat the product to destroy the remained organic matter. Take up the residue with 8N hydrochloric acid, transfer to the column and elute with 8N hydrochloric acid to remove heavy lanthanons, while scandium remained. The latter is finally eluted with 2 N hydrochloric acid. With the procedure outlined above, mixtures containing 1—99 mg of thorium, 5—100μg of scandium and 1—5 mg of heavy lanthanons have been separated. Two columns of 0.9 and 2 cm in diameter are used. Both are packed with TBP/polytetrafluoroethylene mixture to a height of ca. 15 cm. For quantities of each element mentioned up to 10 mg, the smaller column will suffice. For more than 10 mg of thorium, the larger column should be used in order to retain the thorium quantitatively.

By this method, all of the components except isobutylene in the gaseous reaction product could be quantitatively analyzed with the use of correction factor. The absolute deviation is found to be less than 1.2. Separation of isobutylene from its isomers could be carried out on column with acetonylacetone as the stationary liquid, a resolution of 90% for isobutylene and butylene-1 was attained even when the content of isobutylene in the gas mixture is below 2%,or one-tenth of that of butylene-1.

Combining the results from above two columns can determine quantitatively the individual components of the twenty-eight hydrocarbons (C_5—C_7)...

The retention time and retention volume data for these twenty-eight compounds on both columns are listed. The precision and accuracy of the method are good. The time for a complete analysis is about four hours.
