The curing process of an epoxy acrylics based photosensitive resin under a 514 nm Ar + laser beam and the initiation of a synergistic photo initiator composed of a dye, a tertiary amine and an UV photo initiator was studied. It is observed that the transmission of the light in the resin is in agreement with the Lambert Beer's Law. The curing depth is mainly decided by the light energy and the dye concentratin. For a given formula and concentration of the initiator, the curing depth and the curing mass of the resin was observed to increase linearly with the increase of the logarithm of the light energy. In the initial stage, the rate of the curing reaction is almost constant and the reaction is basically a zero order reaction. With the process of the reaction, the rate decreases and the reaction is no further a zero order reaction.

The initiation mechanism of a synergistic photo initiator composed of a dye, a tertiary amine and an UV photo initiator, which is suitable for the initiation of an epoxy acrylics based resin under 514 nm laser beam, was studied using UV visible spectroscopy and fluorescence/phosphorescence spectroscopy. It is proposed that a triplet exciplex be formed between an excited dye molecule and a tertiary amine molecule. The amine free radical is generated from the excilpex and then reacts with an UV photo initiator molecule through charge transfer process to generate free radicals with higher activity, which initiate the polymerization of the resin.
