Apply the theory of variable structure system to design an excitation controller. Pole placement method is used in the selection of hyperplane to simplify the design. This method is more convenient and with less computation than the method based on the quadratic performance index. Digital simulation indicates that the designed controller provides effective damping torque for power system and yields better system dynamic performance than that obtained by using linear optimal control.
