This paper summarizes theexperience on safety mining during initial cavingstage in last six years at Fengfeng mine area, anddescribes the features of pushing-collapsing typeroof falls happened in four kinds of compound roofduring initial caving, as well as their causes andprevention. The features are large area of rooffalls, and less thickness of caved rock. Theimportant causes are that because of separating andbreaking of roof, leakage occurs; oxplosioninduces further breaking of roof, unstability ofsupport...

Therefore, it isimportant for us to adopt various control measuresat initial extraction stage, e. g. before initialcaving stage. The measures are such that supportwill have enough setting pressure, the stability ofsupport structure will be strengthed, prop shoemust be used when contact pressure of floor islower, and bolt-support system supporting will beadopted in roadway and open-off cut.
