The effect of gravity and fluid viscosity on the variability in wetted length of absorbent paper points was investigated. Results There was a close correlation between fluid volumes and wetted length of paper points (r 2=0.9961). The effect of fluid viscosity upon the wetted length was statistically significant ( P <0.001), but there was not statistically significant for the influence of gravity ( P >0.05).Conclusion It indicated that the standard paper point could be used as a quantitative sampling method of periapical exudates. The gravity did not affect the measurement of wetted length of paper points but the fluid viscosity have some effect on gravity.

Objective: ①To detect the concentrations of interleukin 1β(IL 1β) and prostaglandin E 2 (PGE 2) in periapical exudates in the patients with acute or chronic periapical periodontitis; ② To examine their correlations with clinical and radiographic findings of the involved teeth.Methods: The volume of periapical exudates was quantified using the standard paper point sampling method; the concentration of IL 1β and PGE 2 was detected using enzyme linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA) or radioimmunoassay(RIA) in 40 cases with acute and in 40 with chronic periapical periodentitis. Results: ①The volume(μl) of the exudates in the cases with acute periapical periodontitis and chronic were 27.10±15.70 and 3.12±2.88( P < 0.0001 ), the concerntration(μg/ml) of IL 1β in the exudates in the two groups were 74.80±37.90 and 13.80 ±18.29( P <0.001), PGE 2 were 783.20±501.80 and 244.50±215.22( P <0.001), respectively. ② There was a close relationship between the concentrations of IL 1β and clinical findings including spontaneous pain( P <0.01), swelling ( P <0.01), pus discharge( P <0.05), foul odor( P <0.01) and exudates volumes( P <0.05). ③ PGE 2 had a high correlation with spontaneous pain(P<0.01), tooth mobility( P <0.01), exudates volumes( P <0.01) and radiolucent areas( P <0.05).Conclusion: IL 1β and PGE 2 are mainly involved in the acute inflammatory reactions and may play an important role in the development of periapical lesions.
