It is found that values of these basic elements either in the main branching channel or in the secondary branching channel are less than those of the single channel, but the sum of these values of branching channels are larger than that of the single channel. In view of flood control, the braided reaches can carry more flood flow, so that, when it is decided to block the secondary branch by any submerged body, the overall condition must be considered.( 2 ) From the observed data either in field or in river model investigation, there is circulating flow at the island head. Depending upon .this fact, both the longitudinal transportation of suspended load and the transverse transportation of suspended load by circulating flow at the island head are considered when the diversion ratios of sediment in braided reaches are studied, and Eqs. ( 20 ) and ( 21 ) for computing these diversion ratios are derived. The results calculated from Eqs. ( 20 ) and ( 21 ) are coincident well with the observed data from fiefd as shown in Fig. 6.( 3 ) Suspended load connects closely with fluvial process, but bed material load is a very important factor in view of fluvial process . Due to this reason, the diversion ratio of bed material load in braided reaches must also be studied.On the one hand, only the longitudinal transportation of bed material load is considered, and on the other hand, both the longitudial transportation and the transverse transportation of bed material load by circulating flow at the island head are also considered. Then, Eqs. ( 25 ) , ( 26 ) , ( 27) and(28)are derived. The results calculated from these equations are shown in Figs. 11 and 12, it is seen that the results in Fig. 12 is coincident better than those in Fig. 11 with the observed data from field.( 4 ) The field data observed in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River are analysed, and the parameters C and C* describing the degree of uniform distribution of suspended sediment and bed material load along the depth are found. At last, from dimensional analysis and experimental data, formulae of the submerged orifice discharge and its cofficient are derived.
