According to the reaction mechanisms and the effect on the viscosityand surface tension of melts, we present the classification of refining agents for glassmelting.As the application of single refining agents is normally limited to a critical amount,the complex refining agents are used to intensify the refining process. The latter con-ception has been demonstrated in the melting practice of the Na_2O-Al_2O_3-SiO_2 systemglasses.The influence of different compositions of refining agents on the physico-chemicalproperties of glasses should not be overlooked. By comparing the refining effectiveness,some compositions of complex refining agents are suggested.The constituents of complexrefining agents must be determined conformably to the compositions of glasses, the condi-tions of melting,etc.Considering the influence of refining agents on the DTA of batches andphysical properties (viscosity and surface tension ) of glass melts, the chemical reactionsbetween gases and the variation of the partial pressures of gases within bubbles, the re-fining mechanism of complex refining agents is discussed.

    Particle size and mineral components of quartz sand of different resources have been examined. Their effects on melting and working behavior of glass for vacuum bottles have been discussed.Glass melts containing iron in reducing state possess better melting and working properties.
