     Based on the operating condition of the wedges of the turbogenerator and the analysis of the properties of domestic existing copper alloys with higher strength and electric conductivity, the necessity of developing the CuCo2BeZr alloy with superior mechanical property at elevated temperature was expounded. The chemical composition, structure and the properties of the CuCo2BeZr alloy successfully developed by authors were presented in detail. It is believed that the CuCo2BeZr alloy is the best material for the wedges of the large turbogenerator.

The natural frequency and mode shapes of frame, the effects of vibration isolation and suppression, and all the factors that affect the vibration characteristics of generator frame are disscussed. The results of the research have been applied to two generators. The severe vibration of generator stator frame was eliminated. The largest vibration of the generator frame (double amplitude) was reduced from 140—260μm to 10—30μm in one case and from 90—210μm to 10μm in another.

In order to increase the reliability of the excitation system for large turbogenerator and improve its response,a 70 KVA, 3,000 rpm and 400 Hz rare earth-cobalt permanent magnet (REPM) generator has been built as a pilot exciter. A new type of composite magnetic circuit structure has been developed. The calculation formula based upon the electromagnetic field analysis in combination with the epuivalent magnetic circuit analysis relevant to this design have been derived.It ensures the specified technical performance and decreases the amount of Permanent magents. Compared with an Alnico exciter, the technical and economical features of the REPM exciter have been found to be excellent. The successful development of this REPM exciter,as a typical machine, will contribute to the production of the REPM generators of still higher rating up to hundreds KVA.
