B P) and is agreeable with the high sea level period over the whole world in the late stage of the Late Pleistocene (about 35000-23000yr. Radiocarbon datings indicate that the marine deposits at the depths of 23-40m along coast of Bohai Bay were formed sonn after the slope of the peat development (32000 -22900yr. B P) and is agreeable with the high sea level period over the whole world in the late stage of the Late Pleistocene (about 35000-23000yr. BP).The lacustrine-swamp peaty deposits or puddly deposits of various thickness have a wide distribution at the depths of 12-16 m beneath the ground surface and 5-6m depth below the Bohai sea floor with 20-30m water depth. In the light of the radiocarbon datings the peaty deposits concerned can be largely placed in Early Holocene (about 10000-8000yr. BP) and named as Lijiabao. Formation, it can be correlated with the Purangdian Formation of Liaonan region. Above the peaty deposits are in succession developed a series of marine sediments. From the radiocarbon datings of shelly bed and oyster-bearing bed in offshore and epicontinental sediments from the underlying peaty deposits and marine sediments, especially from the top of the latter, the marine sediments may be formed in Middle Holocene (about 8000-2500yr. BP) and named as Hou-chengzhuang Formation which can be correlated to the Dagushan Formation of Liaonan region. Most of recent deposits near ground surface are of fluvial facies, and the peaty deposits are also found in the swamp or the ancient river course. From the radiocarbon datings it can be suggested that the marine sediments beyond the Ⅱ chenier ridge along the western coast-of the Bohai Bay and the continental sediments within the Ⅱ chenier ridge both have the age less than 2500yr. belonging to the Late Holocene and correlating to the Zhuanghe Formation of Liaonan region. It is referred to the Qikou Formation.The lithological changes happened in this region and the datings of Holocene deposits indicate that there has been a transgression in Holocene period and sea water arrived at the studied region 7000 years ago. Later on the transgression reached its maximum in the region 6000-5000 years ago when many regions such as Leting, Luannan, Ninghe, Tianjin, Cangzhou, Huanghua and Haixing along the coast of the Bohai Bay are submerged or affected by sea water. About 4000 years ago there was started a regression forming successively the Tongju-Qianmiaozhuang (4700-4000yr. BP), the Zhang-guizhuang -Changzhuang (3800-3000yr. BP), the Baishaling-Nigu-Qikou(2500-1500yr. BP) and the Chengtougu-Dagu chenier ridges (600-500yr. BP).

Gravel and sand beaches, as well as mud foreshore are well developed in the coves around Zhujiajian Island, the most eastern island of Zhoushan Archipelago.The results of studying its recent coastal sediments are as follows: 1.The distribution of different beach type is controlled by the strength of wave action and the lithological characters of bedrocks.Wave energy is the strongest along the eastern coast of the island Mere, gravel beaches are formed where tuff are exposed,and sand beaches are developed in granitic terrain.Owing to the weakest wave energy,fairly wide mud foreshores are developed along the western coast.While along the northern coast, the wave energy is intermediate as compared with the eastern and western sides, the backshore and the upper part of foreshore are chiefly composed of sands, and the medium and lower parts of the foreshore are composed of silt and mud. 2.A large-scale gravel bar is formed under such a condition that the strength of wave action is strengthened whence the cove is narrowed, usually trumpet shaped, and is supplied with sufficient amount of gravels.Within fairly open cove which is subjected to moderate wave and tidal action,and whence a certain amount of gravels is available,a belted gravel beach is formed owing to the pretty well shape sorting of sedimentation. Five sub-zones have been distinguished in seaward direction, namely; 1) large disc, 2)imbricate, 3) infield frame, 4) spherical rod, and 5) outer frame zones.The beachgravels with their unique roundness and better distinguishable shape,mey be of utility in indentifying ancient beach environment.Besides, their average size may also reflect the intensity of wave action. 3.Sand beach along eastern coast are characterized in fine to very fine grains with high mineralogical maturity and very good sorting which are derived from weathering elastics of medium to fine granular granites.The mean grain size and the values of standard deviation of sands in sub-facies are not very different.They are being carried from a short distance by waves and currents.Those of northern coast are made up of medium to coarse sands with low mincralogical maturity and moderate to good sorting,which are derived from weathering elastics of coarse granular granites.There are big differences between the structural characteristics of different sub-facies.The skewness and bedding features are two combined good environmental indicators which can be used to discriminate further sub-facies either in mediumcoarse sand beaches or in fine sand beaches. 4.Tremendous amounts of suspending matlers, silt and mud, being carried by south ward longshore current issuring from Yantze River mouth and ebb tidal current from Qiantang River, are the source of mud foreshore sediments around the island.The beach patterns and their sedimentary distribution are greatly influenced by seasonal changes.It is abundant in living organisms, both in species varities and indivi-dual numbers.The sedimentary structure are strongly disturbed by those living organisms.

Since Simpson and Hunter proposed the i4ea that sfaialtofw water fronts were induced by tidal mixing in 1974, many authors have investigated the tidal induced shallow water fronts in various areas. It was generally assumed thalt a critical value of the stratified parameter K=log10(H/U3) may foe used to identify the location of these fronts. Here, E means the depth of sea water, U denotes the characteristic velocity of tidal cuinrmt, and the critical value of K is generally taken as 1.8-2.0.In this paper, Simpson-Hunter's stratified parameter K was calculated hy using quasi-maximum current velocity (which consists of the six main tidal constituents, i.e. M2, S2,O1, K1, M4 and MS4) in Huanghai Sea (Yellow Sea) and in the northern East China Sea as well. Calculated results show that the 'areas of the Subei (the northern part of Jiangsu) Shoal, off the mouth area of Changjiang River, along the coast of Shandong Peninsula and along the western coast of Korea, the tidal mixing is strong. Calculations also show that along the whole boundary of HCWM and also along the western boundary of the cyclonic eddy in northern East China Sea, i.e. along the fronts, the value of K is found to be very close to the critical value 1.8. It is also to be noted that at these locations, the temperature of surface water is very low. These clearly show that shallow water fronts in Huanghai Sea and in the northern East China Sea as well, are induced by tidal mixing.

本文应用 Simpson-Hunter 提出的潮混合形成浅水陆架锋的概念,讨论了黄海冷水团锋面及其它有关问题。用近最大潮流流速计算了黄海和东海北部的层化参量,得到划分层化和垂直均匀区的临界层化参量为1.8。在增温季节,整个黄海冷水团的边界是由潮混合控制的。夏季东海北部气旋型涡旋的西边界也由潮混合所控制。海面温度资料还表明:在强潮混合区外缘,存在着由潮混合引起的浅水海洋锋。
