This article reviews the new subject of Metallurgical Reaction Engineering (MRE), which is rapidly developing in the metallurpical field recently all over the world. A brief introduction of the foundamentals of MRE is made. Through the sintering of fine ore together with blast furnace smelting the general theories and analytical methods in the steady state are described. Two examples given show that mathematical simulations can be obtained by the application of MRE. It introduces the general situation of the development of comprehensive utilization of peat at home and abroad (especially abroad in recent years) and points out the broad way of development of utilization of peat in agriculture, animal husbandry, environmental protection, metallurgy, chemical industry, architecture, medicines and as sources of energy etc.This article also presents some opinions on the development of comprehensive utilization of peat in our country for reference. The chief suggestions are as follows:(1) developing the research on gasification of peat and generation of electricity from peat so as to convert it into sources of clean energy.(2) continuing to strengthen the research and probation of peat-base fertilizers and peat-base fodders, some industrial uses Of peat humic substances (used as cathode expanding agent of battery, cement-additive, medicine, caking agent of briquette).(3) developing the research and probation of extraction of peat wax and (4) at present, paying much attention to the research and probation on the peat-base treating agents of the waste water and the waste gas in the field of environmental protection etc.

With reference to the present production practice in Shaoguan Iron & Steel Works, the author of this paper endeavours to put forth his personal point of view and his technical proposal on the following subject matters: matters concerning raw material and fuel specifications, how to dispose them rightly, and how to make the best use of them in metallurgical production ; matters concerning gas flow distribution during metallurgical process; matters concerning rationalization of slag alkalinity subsequent to lowering of silicon content in steel pig; matters concerning how the reduction of coke rate and the increase of iron-making efficiency can be attained by lowering of silicon content in steel pig; matters concerning the decisive points for successful production administration.
