In this paper we emphasize that earth science has traditionally advanced through studies of individual components: atmosphere, oceans and ice cover, biosphere, crust and interior, but modern research is clarifying the dynamic interactions that connect these components and bind them into an integrated earth system, and global observations, new space technology and quantity, rive models have now given us the capability to probe the complex, interactive processes of earth evolution and global change. In this paper we emphasize that earth science has traditionally advanced through studies of individual components: atmosphere, oceans and ice cover, biosphere, crust and interior, but modern research is clarifying the dynamic interactions that connect these components and bind them into an integrated earth system, and global observations, new space technology and quantity, rive models have now given us the capability to probe the complex, interactive processes of earth evolution and global change. The formation backgronnd, goal and substance of earth system science, and the recommended scheme are given as a Program for Global Change. Finally, the Global Geoscience Program which has been implementing by the National Science Foundation of the United States is introduced briefly. It is evident that the Program ha sbeen a part of the Program for Global Change which is also called the International Geosphere Biosphere Programme (IGBP).

Earth System Sciene regards the earth as an integrate system composed of various interacting components (atmosphere, lithosphere,biosphere, hydrosphere etc.), which are subject to both natural external variations and the impact of mankind's activities. The goal of the Earth System Science is to obtain a scientific understanding of the entire Earth System on a global scale by describing how its component parts and their interactions have evolved, how they function, and how they may be expected to continue to evolve on all time scales, thereby to enhance the predicative ability on the variation trend of the living environment of mankind, particularly the variations over decades to a century in future. The Earth System Science will be one of the most grandiose scientific career of mankind at the end of 20th century and over the whole 21st century. Scientists working in the field of mechanics can and ought to make their due contributions in it.

本文简介了近年来国际上兴起的地球系统科学。地球系统科学是应人类面临的基本生存环境危机——全球变化的严重挑战而兴起。它把地球看作由相互作用着的各组元(如大气圈、土壤-岩石圈、生物圈、水圈等)组成的统一系统,研究这些组元及相互作用是如何进行和如何演化的,以及系统对于外部作用变化及人类活动是如何响应的,从而提高人类对于自身赖以生存的地球环境在未来,特别是未来数十年至100年时间尺度上变化趋势的预言能力。地球系统科学将是20世纪末、21世纪人类最宏大的科学事业之一,广大力学工作者应该而且能够在其中作出自己应有的贡献。

Abstract: According to systematica.mode of thinking, we regard the Earth as a system, which seems destined to form a recent Earth system science the global Iront of multidisciplinary initiatives.

当前,人类面临着全球性的一系列重大问题,要有效地解决这些问题,必须把地球作为统一的有机整体,研究组成地球系统的各部分之间的动态相互作用,即研究相互关联的流体子系统、生物地球化学循环子系统和固体地球子系统之间的动态相互作用。同时,把地球系统作为一个开放系统,从而把太阳输入作为控制地球演变的外源。 运用系统思维的方式,把地球作为一个系统来进行研究,从而聚结成为一门崭新的地球系统科学——全球性多学科创新的前沿科学。这种研究方式是一种观念上的基本转变,即运用系统科学认识论和方法论,研究地球系统的整体行为、全球变化的性质和原因,因而地球系统科学就最有利于科学地理解和解决人类共同面临的全球性的重大问题。
