It was indicated that ABR is a reactor of composite hydraulics, which was characterized by continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) flow pattern in each compartment and plug flow (PF) pattern in the reactor as a whole. Both the influent organic concentration and HRT have effect on hydraulic characteristics, and the former is the main factor. The higher the influent organic concentration, the better the hydraulic characteristics in each compartment, and ABR can operate at lower upward-flow velocity. When the same amount of organic matters is removed from all compartments, the longer HRT will result in CSTR flow pattern. When influent substrate has lower concentration, the reactor is preferably to be controlled at 3~4 compartments; and when the substrate has higher concentration, it may be controlled at 6~8 compartments.
