The early test for thirty-one elite trees obtained from f ree pollination in their seedling stage and 1-3 years old plantation shows a significant character variation between their offsprings.By comprehensive evalu-tion, three fine pedigrees growing well during early stage were selected. Their relative genetic gain reaches 12.06% in tall and 68.81% in dreast high diameter. Meanwhile, the evident character variation also exists among the offsprings of elite trees.

The materi-als, methods and general conclusions of various studies are compared and analyzed. Itis thought that selection of proper characters and experimental conditions is crucial toearly testing. Characteristics of seed, seedling and juvenile tree testing plots are goodcharacteristics for early prediction, while some indicators such as photosynthetic rateused as predicative factor are not. The problems frequently arising in many studies aresummarized. It is pointed that henceforward attention should be paid to the age or testmaterials, natural conditions of testing field and the interaction of genotype x environ-ment on the result of early testing. Distinction should be made among results of various testings. The reliability of correlation between early and late generations amongmultigeneration selections is discussed. For the purpose of reducing tcsting fees and in-creasing testing accuracy, a new early testing method---multi-stage selection is pro-posed.

To explore the early selection method for Poplars to resist the infection of Coryneum populinum Bres., a study was conducted in the seriously infected nursery of Dalinghe Forest Farm, Jin County, Liaoning Province. According to the incidence rate and index, a total number of 10 Poplar clones of heavily-infected, medium-infected and resistant ones were selected for in vitro culture. In petri dishes, the spreading leaves of the tissue-cultured Poplar clones were selected for inoculation. A drop of the spore suspension with a concentration of 2×104 spores/ml was dropped at both sides of the main veins of the leaves. Electron microscope and scanning electro-microscope were used periodically to observe the changes of the leaves. The results show:(1) these clones are sensitive to the inoculated fungus; (2) there is a big difference in disease-resistance among the differing clones, and the infection degree is in accordance with that in the field. After inoculation the tissue cultured clones of resistant ones in the field No. 1, 2 and 3 are not infected and their hyphae don't invade the inner tissue of the leaves either. Those of the medium-infected clones: No. 5 and 6, after inoculation, appear a few yellowish-brown spots, while those of the heavily-infected clones: No. 7, 8, 9 and 10 after inoculation appear brown necrogenous spots, and the young saplings wither. This illustrates that it's possible to use in vitro culture method to conduct early testing for disease resistance.

用田间感病、中度感病和抗病的10个杨树无性系为材料进行离体培养,在培养皿中将杨树灰斑病病菌接种在小叶上。结果表明:这些无性系对接种的病菌是敏感的;无性系间在抗病性上差异较大,并且感病程度与田间观测结果基本一致。田间抗病的1、2和3号组培苗经接种后均未发病,病菌菌丝也未侵入组织内部;中度感病的5、6号组培苗接种后出现少量黄褐色斑点;而重度感病的7、8、9和10号组培苗接种点产生了褐色坏死斑,幼苗枯黄。但也有例外,4号虽然在大田中度感病,组培苗接种后却未发病。
