The two-stepconvert method not only increases the difficulty and cost for the production ofdigital instrumentation, but also degrates its accuracy. This paper suggests a newdigital measuring technique which can convert a physical quantity into a conveni-ent digital value in one step, whether the characteristic of sensor is linear ornot. It is "direct calibration technique". The traditional linearization ways areby all means to convert a curve into a straight line, but direct calibration techni-que describes a curve with another analogous curve which can give a digital valuefor the physical quantity. The instrumentations made up with the technique havethe superiorities, such as low cost, simplicity of circuit, high quality and stabi-lity, etc. Some systems of digital thermometers with th irect calibration technique are produced. Such as XH2007 type digital thermometer (range: 0°~+ 300℃,accuracy:±1℃), XH2008 type digital cool warehouse thermometer(range: -80℃~+50℃, accuracy: ±1℃), and XH2015 type digital body thermometer (range:+32℃+44℃, accuracy: ±1℃).

A briefreview of development,working regime,principle of operation and performance of sensors and electronics of the Sediment Dynamics Data Acquisition System developed by University of Washington USA is described in this paper. The features in its designing are also discussed.
