The recent opportunity of examining the faecal material of the water-scorpion Leccotrephes japonensis revealed a flagellate which had not previously been described from this host. After fuller investigation I found that it is a species new to science and should be referred to the genus Retortamona; I have named it Retortamonas leccotrephae sp. nov.The specimens of Leccotrephes japonensis used for studies on the parasitic flagellate R. leccotrephae, were collected from ponds on the outskirts of Shanghai, China. Apart from studying the living flagellates, at the same time stained specimens were prepared for the detailed study of various structures. These specimens were fixed either in Hollande's or in Schaudinn's fluid; stained in Heidenhain's haematoxylin, and destained in 2% aqueous phospho-tungstic acid. Moskowitz' (1950) modification of the Protargol impregnation method was also used for staining.In the living state, the flagellare has a slender, slipper-shaped trunk with an anterior dorsal flexure. The mean body size, exclusive of the posterior spike, is 12.8μ×4.8μ. The length of the slender posterior spike varies from 4.6μ to 15.8μ. There are two flagella of unequal length. The longer one extends forwards and lashes rapidly, causing the animal to rotate and to pursue a special course. The shorter flagellum is directed backwards and usually lies in the cytostome; it moves in an undulating manner.In fixed and stained preparations, the flagellates, not including the posterior spike, show a size-range of 6.2×2.2μto 15.6×5.4μ, with a mean of 11.9×3.4μ. The spike varied from 4.6μ to 13.6μ long, with an average length of 11.2μ. In general, a normal specimen of R. leccotrephae has a slender body; the anterior portion is narrower than the postcerior, and is markedly bent as shown in the living indivi.duals. The posterior portion of the body usually has a dorsal convexity, and the widest region is located near the two-thirds of the body-length from the anterior end.Near that edge of the nuclear membrane lying next to the cytostome, there are two minute, but separate, basal granules which give rise to the two flagella. The anterior flagellum is about as long as the body proper: much longer and more slender than the posterior flagellum, which usually lies within the cytostome, and commonly shows a series of two or three undulations; it often stains more deeply than the anterior flagellum.In hematoxylin preparations the nucleus is well stained, and clearly shows a layer of chromatin granules lying against the nuclear membrane, and a large central endosome, composed of a mass of granules.The cytostome is a large structure in this animal. It usually occupies about twothirds of the total length of the body proper. Along the margin of the cytostome there are two deeply staining fibres, the one on the right margin is longer than that on the left.Both the precystic forms and cysts of R. leccotrephae have been observed. The body of precystic individuals which are preparing to encyst, becomes smailer and rounds up; meanwhile, the chromatin of the nucleus condenses and forms a deeply staining endosome. The anterior flagellum is still disposed freely, and no cyst wall has as yet been formed. The border-line of the cytostome is distinct, but the two basal granules are visible only in favourable preparations. The mature cysts are nearly peanut-shaped, and are about twice as long as wide. In the stained specimens they are about 4.6μ long and 2.4μ wide. The cyst wail is of uniform thickness, and the nucleus is visible at one end. The other conspicuous structures within the cyst are the two flagella and the cytostomial fibres, which are arranged as they are in the trophozoite, except that the anterior flagellum is here directed posteriorly.DISCUSSION & SUMMARYIn its general body-form, R. leccotrephae closely resembles Mackinnon's R. agilis ('11) from crane-fly larvae, and also Corradett's R. gryllotalpae ('37) from the mole cricket, but it is especially like Geiman's R. caudacus ('32) from the aquatic larvae ef certain beetles.

This corresponds to the variation in the. level of vitamin C intake in different seasons. There is no significant difference between Autumn and Winter.3. No definite correlation between plasma vitamin C content and the condition of the gums was observed in the present study.4. The plasma vitamin C content of Chinese and English school children observed by some other authors was lower than that obtained in the present investigation. It is believed that the increase plasma vitamin C of the subjects in this study is mainly due to improvement of the living condition of the population and widespread education of the people in the fundamentals of nutritional science in recent years.

The general histological structure is fundamentally similar to that of the skin of frog (Pl. Ⅰ, Fig. 1). In the superficial layer of the dermis there are large and conspicuous round masses, which are akin to the sieve layer (Siebschicht of Kastschenko) both in appearance and in staining reaction (Pl. Ⅰ, Fig. 1; Pl. Ⅳ, Fig. 6). To our knowledge, the origin and function of these masses as well as the sieve layer are still obscure.According to the living habit, the life of the toad during the year can be divided into three seasons: namely, the hibernating, the breeding and the post-breeding season.In the hibernating season the epidermis reaches its maximal thickness due to increase in cell layer as well as in cell size. Cell division is rare in this season. The superficial layer is evenly cornified and the intensity of comification is intermediate, being stronger than that in the breeding season but less than that in the post-breeding season. This horny layer is connected intimately with the layer below and shows no sign of moulting (Pl.Ⅰ, Fig. 1; Pl. Ⅱ, Fig. 1). The flask-cells of Pfitzner (nucous cells of Legdig or goblet cells of Schultze) are very rare and when present, they are not fully differentiated from the ordinary epidermal cells. Melanophores are greatly expanded both in the epidermis and in the dermis (Pl.Ⅳ, Figs. 4, 3). Dermal papillae are tall and prominent (Pl. Ⅱ, Fig. 1).In the breeding season the epidermis is much thinner than that in the hibernating season. Moulting of skin goes on continuously. In association with moulting the flask-cells increase in number and show vigorous activity in secretion (Pl. Ⅱ, Fig, 2). Numerous amitoses are present in the middle and lower layer of the epidermis. At the initiation of the amitotic division a furrow appears at one side of the nucleus, which deepens and finally cuts the nucleus into two. Sometimes two furrows are formed, causing one nucleus to break up into three. A furrow may start at one end of the long diameter of the elliptical nucleus, causing it to split longitudinally into two daughter nuclei (Pl. Ⅰ, Fig, 2). We call this mode of amitosis furrowing amitosis. The usual mode of amitosis in which the nucleus divides by a central constriction could be found also, but cases are very rare. Mitotic figures are very rare. Melanophores are more or less contracted in the epidermis as well as in the dermis (Pl. Ⅱ, Fig. 2).In the post-breeding season the epidermis is intermediate in thickness between those of hibernating and breeding seasons. Due to the dryness on land the certification of the superficial layer is intense. Sometimes there are three layers of highly cornified cells, while in the other seasons this layer is always simple (Pl. Ⅱ, Figs. 3, 4, 5). Both mitosis and amitosis are present (Pl. Ⅱ, Figs. 6, 7). The former is much more in number than the latter. Wandering cells in the dermis penetrate into the epidermis and become epidermal cells (Pl. Ⅲ, Figs. 1, 2, 3). Flask-cells are fewer in number and less in activity than in the breeding season, hence the moulting of skin goes on slowly. All the melanophores are contracted in the form of a black spot (Pl. Ⅱ, Figs. 3, 4, 5). The blood vessels in the epidermis are greatly expanded, and are therefore easily seen (Pl.Ⅳ, Fig. 6).The nuclei of certain epidermal cells send out processes, which penetrate through the cell membrane and move along the intercellular spaces (Pl. Ⅲ, Figs. 4, 6). Sometimes these processes get into the neighboring cells (Pl. Ⅲ, Figs. 7, 8). In still other cases nuclei sued out coarse processes which come into contact with identical processes sent out by nuclei of neighboring cells (Pl. Ⅲ, Fig. 5). So far as we know, such intercellular activity of nuclei of the epidermal cells has not been heretofore repoifted. Its significance probably lies in the transportation of certain substances such as DNA.
