This paper doscribes the bamboo production and scientific research in Thailand. The bamboo area of Thailand is 1 million ha. There are 41 species altogether, belonging to 12 genera. The average annual culm yield of Thailand is 52 million, being worth 10 million American dollars. The bamboo shoot yield of the whele country has not been counted, so the paper only lists the...

This paper doscribes the bamboo production and scientific research in Thailand. The bamboo area of Thailand is 1 million ha. There are 41 species altogether, belonging to 12 genera. The bamboo shoot yield of the whele country has not been counted, so the paper only lists the area of bamboo groves and the number of bamboo shoot processing factories in Prachinburi. Dendrocalamus asper is the most important species planted for edible bamboo shoots. Thai people have been using bamboo as furniture material for centuries and they have recently set up factories to produce bamboo plywood. Now there are 2 bamboo plywood factories in Thailand, the productive capacity of which is 20000 pieces (120×240cm and thickness 1,2.5,4,6,10mm).All production is performed by machine. Some bamboo plywoods, trays and handicrafts ete. in Chiangmai and Lampoon are also presented in the paper. There was a paper mill using bamboo pulp, but it was closed down at the end of September 1984, because of the shortage of bamboo raw material. In the past Thai people payed less attention to the bamboo research than to the bamboo utilization. The first research project on bamboo was not begun until 1965, co-sponsored by the United Nations Development programme (UNDP)and the Forostry Bureau of the Royal Forest Department(RFD). The main purpose of the project was to estimate the annual productive capacity of Thai bamboo natural forest for pulp and paper industry. This project was completed in 1972. After 1972, all bamboo research activities have been supported by RFD. In 1983. a new research project began as the result of the cooperation between RFD and IDRC (the International Development Research Center of Canada). The project was aimed to introduce and establish the bamboo living collection as sources for bamboo plantation establishment. The programme also included a bamboo farm specially for edible bamboo shoots. The Bamboo Research Centre under RFD and the Forestry Faculty of Kasetsart University are mainly in charge of the research subjects.
