Based on field investigation analysis of engineering costs of structures,waterdelivery pipeline and joints at various aseismic levels,an assessment method of seismic losses in water supply system is put forth in the paper.
Firstly,besides non-engineering factors five factors affecting seismic losses are presented. They are seismic hazard analysis ability,ability on earthquake monitoring and prediction,seismic ability on cities' politics,economy and population,seismic ability on non-engineering reducing disaster and ability on earthquake hazard mitigation and rescue.
The background, aims, research activities, achievements, benefits for social applications and future prospects of research work about the program “Studies for the Seismic Prone Regions and Prediction of Seismic Losses in These Regions During 2006—2020” are introduced in detail.
Lastly, introducing breafly researches to determine the national SSMPR for a period from 2006 to 2020, include a series of researches on med-and long-term (ten-year scale) earthquake prediction based on the seismology, seismo-geology, geodesy, eartnquake engineering, forecast science and so on, and on the prediction maps of national seismic hazard probability, seismic intencity, seismic losses, comprehensive seismic risk index and so on.
The work has important significance to circle earthquake risk areas, judge possible fracture segment of strong earthquake occurrence, provide reliable bases for national economic construction, gradually realize earthquake prediction and minimize seismic losses.

Earthquake disaster seriously endangers human life, so the factors influencing earthquake casualties are discussed in this paper. Firstly, the causes responsible for seismic cas- ualty and main ptterns of seismic life-loss are analyzed. Then, the factors influencing the number of casualties are studied in detail. Finally, several measures for reducing losses of human life are proposed, which can provide some references for reducing seismic losses.
