This article introduces the field tests with Switching surges on eight 220KV power transformers of the Northeast Electric Power System. The test can faithfully simulate the action of switching surges on insulation and will stimulate no residual defects, while the testing equipments are simple. Fault-simulating test on one transformer has revealed that it has comparatively high fault- detection sensitivity. This article introduces the field tests with Switching surges on eight 220KV power transformers of the Northeast Electric Power System. The test can faithfully simulate the action of switching surges on insulation and will stimulate no residual defects, while the testing equipments are simple. Fault-simulating test on one transformer has revealed that it has comparatively high fault- detection sensitivity. The field tests thus performed will offer a suitable testing method to transformers of still high voltage. The transformer under test is excited on the low voltage side in order to cause a switching surge to occur on the high voltage side, an initial transient impulse voltage with excessively high peak value will usually appear on th low voltage side. Reasons for causing such an impulse voltage to occur have been investigated in this article. Measure to decrease this peak value by discharging the capacitors Co of the impulse generator through the T circuit composed of R and C to the low voltage winding is suggested. A practical calculation method is given. With the parameters of the impulse circuit the wave front and tail and the voltage efficiency can be calculated.
