This paper reveals the results of the traffic noise survey during day and night (24 hours)at 10 representative sites in urban areas of Shanghai and presents extensive statistical results of environmental noise at a total of 2117 sites in the urban areas.A distribution map of environmental noise has been made with median level L_(50)to show the statistical results obtained at 2117 sites.Each of the measurement sites are chosen at the center of mesh 250m×250m.The 250 probabilistic readings in dB(A)are measured by a sound level meter with slow response during the rush- hours.The statistical sound level together with the prevailing indices,sound energy equivalent level and noise pollution level are calculated for each area,neighborhood and district as well as the whole city.The noise sources are classified into four categories,i.e.traffic,industrial,residential and other noise.In this paper,the percentage of statistical noise level caused by above mentioned sound sources are given.From the data of 2117 sites in the urban areas of Shanghai the statistical noise level L_(10),L_(50)and L_(90)obtained are 75,62 and 52 dB(A)respectively.A comparison of the present results with the available information of noise level survey in the cities of foreign countries shows that noise pollution in Shanghai is very serious.In addition,The repeatability of measuring data and the results of noise monitoring on high are also discussed here.

The measured results and statistical analysis of traffic noise near the road intersections with traffic control signals are presented. It was found that the traffic noise near intersections is 3-7 dB(A) higher than the noise of freely flowing road traffic in statistical noise levels L50 and L90, but no signigicant difference in L10 and equivalent continuous noise level Leq was found.
