The selection of combustion-chamber types of diesel-engines for underground mines is closely related to the performance of the engines themselves. The selection of combustion-chamber types of diesel-engines for underground mines is closely related to the performance of the engines themselves. The advantages and disadvantages of two major types of diesel engines, in the aspects of exhaust gas emission,economy in use and noise level and the like, are discussed.It is considered that the concentration of nitro-oxides in exhaust gas is the key criterion in evaluating the quality of the exhaust. In regard to this, a separate-chamber diesel engine is proved to produce much lower NOx concentration than those produced by a direct-spraying combustion-chamber diesel engine. Concerning the cost of ventilation, a separaten-chamber engine is not ferior to the engine of direct spraying system from the view point of economy in use. It has been proved that it is even better when used in mines where ventilation pressure is high, and also wins an advantage over the direct-spraying system owing to its lower noise level, high-speed performance and less trouble in the fuel oil system. In conclusion, the author recommends the separate combution chamber diesel engine for underground mining purposes.

Three spraying systems were designed, constructed, and field tested in cooperas tion with the USDA Forest Service, Georgia Forestry Commission, and Scott Paper Company. One system was designed to mount on commonly-used wildland tree planting machines and to apply a band treatment for herbaceous weed control. A top mounted 50-gallon fuel tank and a small electric pump along with a regulator and strainer formed the system. Another sprayer mounted on a small crawler tractor was used for spraying low brush and kudzu. A 250 gal. poly-tank, a high-form space-saver, was used with a hydraulic pump and cluster nozzle. Finally, a skidder-mounted spray system used a 600 gal mild steel tank, a gasoline powered pump, and 22-tip manifold nozzles. Both tractor-mounted sprayers injected herbicides into the water stream relative to ground speed. Application costs appear to be favorable for treatments of small tracts, sensitive areas, and around the margins of aerially-treated units.
