In the present experiment,nine species and varieties of beans currently cultivated inChecking,China,were used in order to study their growth behavior and flowering in responsesto different photoperiods.They are the pole kidney bean,Phaseolus vulgaris;bush bean,P.vulgaris.var.humilis;adzuki bean,P.angularis;Mung bean P.aureus;rice bean,P.calcaratus;asparagus bean,Vigna sesquipedalis;cowpea;V.sinensis;sword bean,Canavalia gladiata;andlablab bean,Dolichos lablabIt was proved that all the beans herein studied were primarily of short-day plants.Butthere were great variations in responses to day length among varieties and species.The kidneybean,asparagus bean and cowpea were practically of day-neutral type.Only a few days weredelayed in flowering under short day(8 hours)condition.Whereas the mung bean,adzukibean,rice bean etc.were of typical short-day plants.The time required from seeding toflowering were delayed remarkably as the photoperiods were lengthened from 8-hour to 24-hourdays.Evidence was also found that photoperiod influenced not only the flowering time,but alsothe plant height and branching habit.Mung bean,adzuki bean and cowpea,which were ofbushlike in natural day-length,became twining growth form as the photoperiods werelengthened.Rice bean which was high twining in habit in responses to natural day-lengthand 24 hour photoperiod,became erect and bushy in responses to the photoperiod of 8 hours.Sword bean and lablab bean showed the twining habit in respbnses to the photoperiod of both24-and 8-hour,as well as to the natural day-length.As the photoperiods were shortened from 24-hour to 8-hour,more side branches were foundat the basal nodes.And the average number of nodes to the first inflorescence decreased.In comparison with long day responses,the stem anatomy of mung bean grown under 8-hour photoperiod Was usually with less cambium activity,and fewer cell layers Of phloem andxylem elements.

We have also found that the number,type and arrangement of the intrarenal arteries correlate with the number,type and arrangement of the first order branches of the renal arteries.The name “accessory arteries” is usually given to those which do not enter the kidney through the hilum.Our observations have made us believe that the distribution of the so-called accessory artery is in noway different from the ordinary segmental ar- tery.Only when 2 arteries exist in one segment,the name “accessory artery” can be given.Whether or not an extra-artery belongs to the accessory artery can only be judged by examining the intraorganic as well as the extraorganic parts of the arteries.In ques- tionable cases the name “aberrant artery” is a better choice. In most cases there is a close correlation of the external forms of the kidneys and the arrangements of the intraorganic arteries.We have found that the form of the an- terior half of the kidney is of the “bean type” in 80%,the posteriorhalf is of the “comma type” in 83%.In the “bean type”,the lips of the organ usually assume the “dentate type” (festoon type) in 95.38%,and their intrarenal arteries are of the “mul- tiple branch type” in 95.38%,whereas in the “common type”,the lips of the organ are of the “angular type” in 95.71% and the arrangements of the intraorganic arteries of the “chief branch type” in 97.85%.This rule of correlation will help the surgeons to have an idea on the arrangement of the arteries by judging from the shape of the kidney.

The highly toxic drug Wu-Tou is traditionally detoxified before use by various methods.One of the methods in current use is “the bean-curd method”,which is to soak the crude drug in water at room temperature for several days and then to cook the soaked drug with water and some bean curd.It was found that during the simple soaking period,the contents of alkaloids decreased in parallel with the toxicity as tested in mice.After being cooked,however,the drop in the contents of alkaloids was far behind...

The highly toxic drug Wu-Tou is traditionally detoxified before use by various methods.One of the methods in current use is “the bean-curd method”,which is to soak the crude drug in water at room temperature for several days and then to cook the soaked drug with water and some bean curd.It was found that during the simple soaking period,the contents of alkaloids decreased in parallel with the toxicity as tested in mice.After being cooked,however,the drop in the contents of alkaloids was far behind the drop in the toxicity,apparently a qualitative change having occurred in the drug.It was also found that “the boiling-in-brine method” was much more efficient in detoxifying the drug than both “the bean-curd method” and “the simple boiling method”.After Wu-Tou was boiled in brine,the toxicity of the cooked product was lowered to less than 1/130 of that of the crude drug,and its cardiotonic index,i.e.the ratio between the T.D.50 and the E.D.50 as deter- mined on the isolated toad heart with A.-V.block or cardiac peristalsis and positive inotropic effect as respective indices,was raised from <1 (the in- dex of the crude drug) to 11.5.As “the boiling- in-brine method” is high in efficiency and easy to perform,it is recommended to replace the existing methods for detoxifying.Wu-Tou.

在乌头的传统炮制过程中,水浸阶段能使乌头的总生物碱含量和对小白鼠毒性平行减少。经加热处理后,生物碱含量减少与毒性降低间并无平行关系,显然起了质的变化。作者等发现了“盐煮法”比“水煮法”及“豆腐同煮法”为佳。乌头经盐煮后,其毒性降至原有生药的1/130以下,其半数中毒量与半数强心有效量得到更好的分化,强心指数从原生药的<1提高至11.5,且“盐煮法”简便易行,可供改进乌头炮制方法的参考。
