    In view of the necessity of a rapid and accurate process for the deter-mination of fluorine applicable in the analysis of sodium fluoride and otherfluorine compounds,the author has established a new volumetric processconsisting in the titration in aqueous-alcoholic medium with ferric nitrate asstandard solution and sodium salicylate as indicator.All of the methods,published by Guyot,Greeff,Fairchild andVisintin proposed for the determination of fluorine using ferric solutionas standard,are based on the reaction:6NaF+FeCl_3→Na_3FeF_6+3NaCl....

But the sodium ferric fluoride thus formed is fairly soluble in water and makesthe end-point unclear,therefore the titration can not be performed accurately.This seems to be due to the fact that the following two reactions advancesimultaneously,and accordingly the formation of sodium ferric fluoride is in-complete in aque(?)us medium:3NaF+Fe(NO_3)_3→FeF_3+3N_aNO_33NaF+FeF_3→Na_3FeF_6Nevertheless,these reactions,according to the author's experiments;proceedalmost quantitatively in meda.containing at least 50% by volume of alcohol.This paper reports the xperimental results obtained in the fundamentalstudies on the various factors influencing the accuracy of the volumetry,namely,the sensitivity and the necessary amount of sodium salicylate used asindicator,the pH value,the alcoholic concentration of the titration medium,the concentration of the fluoride taken for the determination and the timewhen alcohol should be added in the course of titration.Furthermore,a rapidvolumetric process with high accuracy is proposed together with its applicationsin ordinary analyses of sodium fluoride and other fluorine compounds.The proposed method is characteristic in using sodium salicylate asindicator,which shows sharp violet color with minute amount of ferric ion inmedium of pH 3 controlled with buffer solution,then titrating with standardferric nitrate,and adding proper amount of alcohol(the alcoholic concentra-tion at the end-point should be above 50%)during the titration,when themedium becomes orange yellow in color.The method may be summarized as follows:Take 5 ml of neutral sodiumfluoride solution of about 0.3 N in a small Erlenmeyer flask,add 2.5 mlof Walpole's buffer solution of pH 3(formed by dissolving 34.0 g ofcrystalline sodium acetate and 20 ml of 38% HCl in water,and making upto 250 ml)and 1 ml of 0.1 M sodium salicylate dissolved in 50% alcohol.After sufficient stirring,titrate with standard 0.3 N(0.05 M)ferric nitratesolution,using micro-burette until the medium becomes orange yellow,thisstep being reached after addition of about 4 ml of titrant.Then decolorizethe solution by adding 12.5 ml of absolute alcohol(or 13 ml of 95% alcohol),previously purified by redistillation with lime;stirring is necessary during theaddition.Further continue the titration until the light pink color formeddoes not fade after stirring for 30 seconds when observed over a white surface. In the analyses of sodium fluoride and other fluorine compounds con-taining interfering substances,such as divalent and polyvalent metallic ions,phosphate,silicate,borate,carbonate,sulfide ions and reductants acting on ferricion,it is necessary to separate fluorine from these interfering substances bythe distillation with sulfuric acid according to the method of Willard andWinter(20).Then the distillate is neutralized with dilute sodium hydroxideand adjusted to the proper pH with hydrochloric acid using p-nitrophenol asindicator.The solution is ready for titration as described.But in the caseof absence of these interfering substances except carbonate,for example,inthe determination of the concentration of sodium fluorde solution obtained bythe extraction of the crude product,produced industrially by fusing fluorsparwith sodium carbonate and silica,the above separation of fluorine by dis-tillation is dispensable.The anaIytical results obtained by the proposed method are in goodagreement with those obtained by the lead chlorofluoride process(8),whichis recognized as official method for the determination of fluorine in agriculturalproducts.

    Even though in the application of adsorption to industry or research one almost never deals with solutions containing only a single solute, yet the number of investigations on the adsorption from mixed solutions is very limited. Following the lead of Freundlich the generally held opinion is that the effect of one adsorbate on the adsorption of another is simple displacement. While this may be true for some special cases, it is undoubtedly too simple to be of general validity, because the various interactions, such as solid-solvent, solute-solute, solute-solvent, have been neglected in this theory. In the theoretical study of chromatography it is necessary to know the equation for the adsorption isotherm when more than one solute are present in the solution. The most widely adopted equation for this purpose is (x/m)_a=k'_aC_a/(1+k_iC_i) (1) This equation can be easily derived from that for a single adsorbate: x/m = k'C/ (1+kC) (2) by assuming that the presence of an additional solute merely reduces the available surface area of the solid. Formally, this equation is analogous to that of Langmuir for the adsorp- tion of gaseous mixtures, replacing pressures by concentrations, but it is actually an empirical equation, because the numerical values of the k's can be obtained only from experimental data and their physical significance is not at all clear. This equation predicts the de-pression of the adsorption of one solute by another. While it is in line with the current idea, there is no experimental proof of its validity. It is the dual purpose of the present investigation to substantiate or disprove the dis- placement theory and to test the applicability of equation (1). We have studied the adsorption from binary solutions of hydrochloric, acetic, and oxalic acids by sugar char. The adsorbates are chosen because of their widely different strength. Sugar char is chosen because it has been shown from previous studies that with this adsorbent the experimental data for single adsorbate follow equation (2). The experimental results are given below: HCl-CH_3COOH and CH_3COOH-H_2C_2O_4 systems: (1) The adsorption of any acid is less than when it is present alone; (2) When the corresponding (x/m)'s are plotted, straight lines with negative slopes are obtained; (3) The slopes of these straight lines vary with the concentration of the acid being displaced; (4) The order of the displacing power, measured by the slope, is HCl> CH_3COOH > H_2C_2O_4, while the order of adsorption is just the reverse; (5) Equation (1) is not valid. HCl-H_2C_2O_4 system: (6) The adsorption of HCl is decreased; (7) When its concentration is higher than about 0.005 N, the adsorption of oxalic acid is increased; at lower concentrations the adsorption is decreased; (8) The higher the concentration of HCl is, the more pronounced will be the increase of adsorption of oxalic acid; (9) Corresponding (x/m)'s give straight lines whose slopes change sign as C_ox increases beyond 0.005 N. From (3) and (4) it is concluded that the observed decrease of adsorption is not due to simple displacement. Based on the hypothesis that it is primarily the solvent which is displaced with the subsequent shift of equilibrium, a mechanism is proposed to account for the effect of one solute on the adsorption of another, which seems to agree with all the observed results. The increase of the adsorption of oxalic acid disproves conclusively the displacement theory. The fact that there is a critical concentration below which the adsorption of oxalic acid is decreased indicates that there are two opposite influences at work. It is suggested that three factors contribute to the increase of adsorption of oxalic acid: (a) the decrease of dissociation; (b) the lowering of solubility; and (c) electrostatic effect. To determine the relative importance of these factors requires further investigation. Finally, an empirical equation involving three constants has been derived to represent the adsorption of oxalic acid in the presence of hydrochloric acid.

    Various kinds of acid igneous rocks are found around the Kushan, to theeast of Foochow, Fukien. One earlier variety of the granites, provisionally termedas Kushan Granite, is coarser-grained, often flesh-colored, and biotite-bearing,similar in character to the most frequently seen and widely distributed graniteof whole Fukien; the other, the Kueichi Granite, often intruding into the firstnamed, is colored by different shades of grey, mostly, fine-grained, and mia-rolitie, containing minor amount of hornblende...

    Various kinds of acid igneous rocks are found around the Kushan, to theeast of Foochow, Fukien. One earlier variety of the granites, provisionally termedas Kushan Granite, is coarser-grained, often flesh-colored, and biotite-bearing,similar in character to the most frequently seen and widely distributed graniteof whole Fukien; the other, the Kueichi Granite, often intruding into the firstnamed, is colored by different shades of grey, mostly, fine-grained, and mia-rolitie, containing minor amount of hornblende instead of biotite, yet sometimesvarying its texture to felsitic, porphyritic, or even to micro-graphic. In thecourse of weathering, the soils thus formed from these two granites, as well astheir corresponding surface vegetations are also evidently dissimilar. That the Kueichi granite was really intruding into the Kushan is evidencedby its ramifying apophyses in the latter, its broad marginal phase, its miaro- litie cavities elongated and lined parallel to the intrusive contact and the"sericitization front", so to show a convex curvature facing the Kushan Graniteside along their mutual contact. The prevalent strike of the contact of the granites conicides with thefracture and joint systems of the Kushan Granite, one set of which is N65°E,being also parallel to one of the major vertical joints of the Kueichi. This isprobably due to the prolonged fracturing during the formation of Pacificfolding zones of the Chekiang and Fukien coast, rendering the KueichiGranite intruding along the said fracture system yet itself subjected to the samemechanical stress. Rocks correlated to these two granites are found elsewhere in Fukien. Theymay also be comparable to the two granites of Sihwashan, S. Kiangsi, foundby C. S. Mo and his colleagues. The repeated intrusions of the Post-Jurassicgranites may allow to consider the possibility of repeated formations of theirgenetically related ores. The lead-zinc deposits of Yuntai and Lungyai areprobably related to the igneous activity of the Kueichi Granite.

    经初步瞭解,福建鼓山分布着两种后侏罗纪花岗岩。这从岩石地面分布上的接触情况与显微镜下观察的岩石中组成成分的接触情况两方面得到证实的。从二者产生状态看来,彼此生成时间甚为接近,而同属於太平洋运动产物,分属早晚期活动。再根据前人各种地质文件,推论出福建各地普遍存在着相当於这两种侵入的花岗岩类岩石。因此,联系到福建后侏罗纪金属矿成矿作用的多次性可能。这在江西西华山已有发现。此后从多次性来研究后侏罗纪的炎成矿床的成矿作用,成为必要了。
