These composite powders were characterized by UV/Vis spectra, FT-IR, TEM, XRD, and BET techniques. It was found that the growth and anatase-to-rutile transformation of titania nanocrystals in the composite were retarded significantly in the presence of small amount of silica. Mesoporous TiO2 with high specific surface area and crystalline framework was obtained by selective dissolving of silica in composite. The fact that more than 90% of silica was removed after selective dissolving and the resulting TiO2 was mesoporous with mean pore size about 4nm suggested the network of ultrafine silica was continuous and uniform.

Two kinds of SnO 2 nanocrystalline, spheroid with fine structure and rhombus, have been prepared with SnCl 4·5H 2O as a raw material by solvothermal process in oleic acid and ethanol seperately and characterized by means of X-ray diffraction, selected area electron diffraction, transmission electron microscope, specific area and gas sensitivity measurement. The results showed the spheric SnO 2 nanocrystalline has higher specific surface area(146m 2·g -1) and lower sensing temperature(about 160℃) than another one and is more favorable for the application in gas-sensitive detection.
