Data from sub-bottom profiles, side scan sonar, and shallow drilling reveal the environment of the submarine engineering in the Xiamen Harbour. Two respect are discussed in this paper. The first is that the present sedimental environment is controlled by grain size, sediment transport, dynamic condition, and accumulation rate. The second deals with the assessment on the regional submarine engineering environment, including the characteristics and thickness of loose deposit layers, the contour and weathered situation of bedrock, and various types of instability of sea floor.The results can be summarized as follows: (1) Three kinds of different sedimental facies and four structural units of different submarine engineering can be classified. (2) Five kinds of instability can be identified and (3) The closed relationship between local instability and regional engineering environment is described.

It is very important to evaluate scientifically the marine engineering geological conditions on the basis of research on various factors for geologic hazards. The potential factors for geologic hazards are the essential causes of geologic hazards. They not only affect the process of marine oil exploration and development, but also cause a lot of unexpected economic loss in submarine engineering operations. This paper studies the types, size distribution, formation process, and inducing factors for possible geolgic hazards, on the basis of practical surveys in South China Sea more than 20 years. The practical measures for preventing geologic hazards are suggested in order to provide a foundation for the development of sea resources.

南海是我国海洋开发的重点海区之一,调查潜在地质灾害因素,科学地评价海洋工程地质条件至关重要。本文根据20多年的调查资料,研究了南海可能产生的地质灾害类型、规模、分布特征、形成机制和诱发因素,分析了南海地质灾害因素主要特征,提出今后研究方向,为科学开发海洋资源提供依据。
