A method based upon simple diffraction theory is described for the calculation of modified paraboloid reflectors to produce from a point source a shaped beam of arbitrary shape in one plane and uniformly narrow in the perpendicular planes. A specific application of the shaped beam antennas is in connection with radar antennas designed for height finding. In this case the antenna must have a sharp elevation beam for obtaining precise elevation information and a rapid elevation scan. The beam must be relatively broad in azimuth in order that the target will be held in the beam long enough to obtain height information. If a fixed minimum of illumination is to be achieved at a given linear distance on both sides of the center line of the azimuth beam, the amplitude pattern must have the so-called "double cosecant" or "beavertail" shape.

Attention has been paid to the fact that grouping associatiop between particles exists in clouds as well as in rain. Coherent scattering of radar waves from cloud and rain drops dependent to, each other has been evaluated and a new radar equation derived. The new equation involves the old one as its special form in the case of incoherent scattering. It is found that the effect of coherent scattering in some cases is not quite small and should not be neglected.

A practical means is presented for the design of a coherent Integrating Filter (GIF) covering the whole doppler frequency range with a single channel, as it is much simpler than the usual way of implementing the coherent integration by a large number of parallel channels each matched at a different doppler frequency, therefore it is easier to implement and superior than the parallel matched filters scheme. The paper has analyzed the principle of operation of the GIF, pointed out that it is equivalent to a set of high frequency sweeping comb filters but with no sweeping loss. GIF implements the optimum receiver by inclined cutting the Woodward's "uncertainty function" as contrast with the ax-is parallel cutting implemented by the matched filters.The block diagram of a radar system with GIF is presented in the last section and the choice of some system parameters is explained.
