    The absorption band at 2240 A discovered by Stucklen in an underwater spark does not agree with the band observed by Hulthen and Zumstein in a high temperature oven and later studied by Grundstrom. The important difference lies in the complete lacking of the R-branch lines in Stucklen's band. New experimental investigation led to the discovery of the unfound R-branch lines. This is a strong evidence that the bands are actually the same.

Sipeimine is a strong monoacidic tertiary base, containing one alcoholic hydroxyl group and one carbonyl group. Its methiodide, C_(27)H_(43)O_3N·CH_3I, colorless needles, m.p. 252°(decomp.), methoperchlorate, C_(27)H_(43)O_3N·CH_3ClO_4, colorless needles, m.p. 281° (decomp.), monoacetyl derivative, C_(29)H_(45)O_4N, colorless prisms, m.p. 189°, [α]_D-39.6° (CHCl_3) and mono-oxime C_(27)H_(44)O_3N_2, colorless needles, m.p. 171°, are obtained. It contains at least three carbon-methyl groups but has no active ethylenic linkage, nor has any active methylene group been detected. It does not form sparingly soluble digitonide with digitonin. From the similarity of its empirical formula, botanical origin and properties, sipeimine probably belongs to the steroidal alkaloids as peimine does. A partial formula is presented as follows:

Such repetitive responses are relatively more conspicuous in sensorymotor cortex, where it may last for more than 2 seconds. The duration of each negative wave varies between 20-50 msec, and the amplitude may reach as high as 1 mV. When one of the negative waves was made to overlap in time with the initial surface negative wave elicited by another stimulus, the latter suffered a decrease. When atropine or procaine was applied to the cortical surface, it was found that both of the surface negative waves were affected parallelly. As the initial surface negative wave is generally regarded as representing the activity of the apical dendrites of the pyramidal neurons, the negative waves of the repetitive responses are inferred as also representing the activity of the apical dendrites. Application of procaine to the cortical surface depressed the negative waves of the repetitive responses rapidly, though the total duration of the repetitive activity was not shortened. The repetitive responses were more easily set up when the tips of the stimulating electrodes were inserted 1 mm deep into the cortex than when they were just touching the cortical surface. Neither transection of the brain stem between inferior and superior colliculi nor removal of the thalamic sensory nuclei affected the production of the repetitive responses. Such responses, however, could be completely abolished by the removal. of the central portion of thalamus. Stimulation applied to this portion of thalamus could elicit responses in the cortex of a pattern similar to that elicited by cortical stimulation. Repetitive responses of same frequency as that recorded from the cortical surface could also be led from this portion of the thalamus after cortical stimulation. From the above experimental evidences, it appears that the generation of the repetitive responses under consideration involves the action of some closed circuit existing between the cerebral cortex and the central portion of the thalamus, and that the repetitive surface negative waves are due to periodic bombardment on the apical dendrites by nervous impulses coming from that circuit.
