Gel extraction is a newly proposed separation process used mainly for macromolecular solutions. The efficiency of gel extration is dominated by the partition of solute betweem the gel and the solution. The capacity of the process is greatly affected by the deswelling of the gel. Gel extraction is a newly proposed separation process used mainly for macromolecular solutions. The efficiency of gel extration is dominated by the partition of solute betweem the gel and the solution. The capacity of the process is greatly affected by the deswelling of the gel. On the basis of Flory′s theory and by using a scaling expression of the elastic free energy of gel network, equations governing deswelling degree and position coefficient are obtained. Factors affecting the deswelling and the partition are analyzed. It is demostrated that the swelling degree of gel in pure solvents cannot be used as a measure of the concentrating capacity of gel extraction in many cases. The theory explains the fact that the amount of solute penetrating into the gel phase is reversly proportional to both the density of the gel network and the solute size. Therefore, the "size exclusion" of gel to macromolecular solute is a thermodynamic effect. Generally, gel extraction is favourable for the concentration of large solutes from dilute solutions, with the solutes having no affinity for the gel network.

在Flory理论的基础上,用凝胶网络弹性自由能的标度关系推导分析了滞胀度和分配系数的表达式及其影响因素。结果表明很多情况下不能用凝胶在纯溶剂中的平衡溶胀度来估计凝胶萃取的浓缩能力。理论上还预示进入凝胶网络中的溶质量随凝胶致密程度的增加和溶质分子尺寸的增加而减小,这表明凝胶网络对大分子溶质的排斥是一种热力学效应。
