Azolla is a genus of small floating aquatic ferns, this fern-algal symbiotic association is capable of multi-pathways energy metabolism of photosynthesis, nitrogen fixation and H_2 evolution. These multipathways are on the basis of photosynthesis. The natural distribution of the ferns in China consists only of the species, Azolla imbricata (Roxb) Nakai. Its net photosynthetic rates have been measured under various growing conditions by QGD Model 07 Infrared CO_2 Analyser, and made some comparison with A. filicuioides....

These multipathways are on the basis of photosynthesis. The natural distribution of the ferns in China consists only of the species, Azolla imbricata (Roxb) Nakai. Its net photosynthetic rates have been measured under various growing conditions by QGD Model 07 Infrared CO_2 Analyser, and made some comparison with A. filicuioides. The results are as follows:1. Photosynthetic light saturation point varies in different seasons. In the spring, it is about 6,000 lux both for A. imbicata and A.filiculoides. In the summer it is about 8,000 lux for A. imbricata, or about 14,000 lux for A. filiculoides. The light compensation point is in the range of 500-1000 lux (Fig. 2 and 3).2. Under violet plastic film, the net photosynthetic rate is the maximum, and under yellow or green film it is lower (Fig. 4).3. Optimum temperature for photosynthesis is in the range of 25 to 32℃, but for the reddened plants it is in the range of 18~32℃. In the range of 5~45℃, the net photosynthetic rate may be detected (Fig. 5).4. Optimum pH for photosynthesis of green plants is 6, but for the reddened plants it is 5.5. Plants can grow in the range of pH 4.5~10.5 (Tab. 1).5. Suitable amount of HCO_3~- can obviously stimulate photosynthesis, shorten the doubling time (Tab. 2). No_3~- can stimulate the photosynthesis of the not well grown plants, but NO_3~- isn't effective for well grown plants (Fig. 8).Therefore Azolla imbricata can easily be adapted to the environment conditions, which is favorable for regulation and control to its energy metabolism. It is apparent that photosynthesis of Azolla would be effectively increased under the optimum conditions.
