In this paper, the "0.618" method is used to the optimum design of rein- forced concrete members. For R. C. frames, optimum design will be accom- plished by iterations. Each iteration begins with a structural analysis of the design obtained from the previous iteration; then each member of frame is subjected to optimization under the internal forces given by the analysis; if the members of frame are divided into groups of same size, the controlling size of members will be determined for each group; the new design so obta- ined will be the object of the next iteration. The method is quite simple and convergent quickly. On the small digital computer TQ-16, only 3 seconds are required to optimize a beam or a column with rectangular section, and a minimum-cost design of a frame with two bays of five stories requires 7-10 minutes including printing time.

By means of a perturbation method, this paper solved the nonlinear line-spring model for the elastic-plastic analysis of surface cracks, and calculated the related J-integral and tearing modulus T1 with the surface cracked thin plate and cylindrical vessel as exapmles. Comparing our results with the previous iteration, it may be readily seen that the perturbation method has the advanges of wide application, better accuracy and greater economy for calculation time.
