By means of the LT representation the author calculated the energy levels and the splittings of sharp lines in ruby. The interaction between various configurations has been taken into account. The splittings of energy levels of R and B lines so obtained agree well with experimental results. But the splitting of ground state comes out too small to be compared with experiment. If may be attributed to the perturbation of the higher energy levels. .

Thermoluminescence of CR excitation shows the existence of deep traps which are responsible for the slow decay.Finally the model of luminescence decay in this phosphor is proposed according to experimental results.

Samples of the system Ba1-xCaxFCl were prepared by firing the blended mixtures of appropriate amount of BaFCl and CaFCl.The phase diagram and the subsolidus relationship of the system Ba1-x, CaxFCl have been studied by the thermal analysis and by the lattice parameter determinations respectively.In this system there exists a compound of Ba0.5Ca0.5FCl,which incongruently melts at 804℃.The Eu2+activated samples of this system were prepared by heating Ba1-xCaxFCl with 1 mole% thoroughly mixed EuCl3 at 760℃ for half an hour. Meanwhile the EuCl3 undergoes a thermal reductive decomposition and thus formed Eu2 + ions incorporate into the host lattice and occupy the sites of Ba2 + or Ca2 + . The luminescent properties of these samples under the excitation of cathode ray,X-ray and UV(2537A) light were investigated.The luminescence spectra of these samples excited by X-ray(Cu,Ka, 50kV,20mA) consist of a sharp line emission peaking at 3630A(Eu2+ 6P7/2-8S7/2)and a band emission.The peak wavelengths of these bands shift from 3868A for BaFCl:Eu2+ to 4640A for CaFCl:Eu2 + . For the samples Ba1-x CaxFCl:Eu2 + with 0.7sharp line emission peaking at 3630A in the cathode ray luminescence spectra of the Ba-rich samples is due to the absorption of ultraviolet light by the lead glass window of the arrangement.
