Kink instabilities of a sharp boundary plasma column with elliptical cross-section are studied. A general form of dispersion relation expressed in terms of elliptical eigenfunctions and analytical results for single-mode and double-mode perturbation (to second order in ellipticity δ) are given. For an arbitrary ellipticity, numerical calculations are carried out.

In this article correct boundary conditions are given for a sharp boundary plasma with arbitrary aspect ratio, beta value and plasma cross-section. Numerical calculations are carried out for the circular elliptical and racetrack cross-section plasma with different aspect ratio and elongation b/a. The effect of a conducting shell located at various places and having different cross-section on stabilities of the plasma is calculated. The numerical results show that the critical beta value of a racetrack cross-section plasma is higher than that of the corresponding elliptical cross-section plasma and increases with 6/a. A conducting shell close to the plasma has a certain stabilizing effect. In the presence of a conducting shell, it seems that the marginal poloidal mode is predominantly the m=1 mode. Compared with Freidbergand Grossmann's work, a relative difference of 23% in the critical beta value and a difference of 15% in the critical q for the circular cross-section plasma with aspect ratio A=2 are found, . ,..
