When babbitt is casted on the surface of cast iron, it is not easy for the babbitt to bond with cast iron as it does with steel, because cast iron contains more impurities, such as carbon, silicon, etc., especially the graphite which interrupts the babbitt from bonding with iron. An acid solution of rather high percentage of hydrofluoric acid for pickling is used with an attempt of producting a rather pure iron layer on the surface of cast iron. When babbitt is casted on the surface of cast iron, it is not easy for the babbitt to bond with cast iron as it does with steel, because cast iron contains more impurities, such as carbon, silicon, etc., especially the graphite which interrupts the babbitt from bonding with iron. An acid solution of rather high percentage of hydrofluoric acid for pickling is used with an attempt of producting a rather pure iron layer on the surface of cast iron. The iron articles, so treated, are then rinsed with hot water and cold water, and transferred into a solution of alkaline salt to boil for more than half an hour. The surface for reaction is, then, heavily brushed with fine copper brush. After washing in running wa er and passing through a solution of hydrochloric acid solution, the cast iron is then fluxed in a hot solution of zinc chloride and finally transferred to the metallic bath for "tinning". The process of "tinning" should be carried out under strictly controlled temperature and time of soaking. After"tinning", the lining of babbitt metal is poured on the surface of cast iron in a permanent mould and the rate of cooling should be carefully observed. A number of tests of the articles, so babbitted, show that the bonding force between cast iron and the babbitt is above 302 kg/cm~2. If the centrifugal casting method were used as in the manufracture of bearing, the bonding force could be expected to be stronger.

The nature of the chemical bond in conjugate triatomic molecules such as ClO2, O3, SO2, NO2, CO2, N3-, NO2+, N2O, HgCl2, etc. has been discussed from the point of view of the molecular orbital theory. It has been demonstrated quantum mechanically that the conditions of forming a conjugate π bond are: (1) Each atom of the AB2 molecule has a p orbital of approximately equal energy and parallel to one another; (2) the total number of p electrons must be less than two times the number of p orbitala. Triatomic molecules with 16 to 19 valence electrons fulfil these conditions, hence they are conjugate molecules. Two styles of writing the structural formulas of such molecules are proposed as shown in the following table:where the dotted lines in type (Ⅰ) formulas represent the conjugate π bonds, while the symbol Ⅱnm means that the π bond involves m electrons and n atoms. The m electrons will fill the bonding, nonbonding and anti-bonding molecular orbitals successively, so that the bond orders of Ⅱ35,Ⅱ34 and Ⅱ33 are 1/2, 1 and 1 respectively. Intype (Ⅱ) formulas, the dots in each rectangular block represent electrons forming a conjugate π bond, while those outside are non-bonding electrons, and the valence electrons of each atom may be clearly counted. The observed bond angles, bond distances, dipole moments and magnetic susceptibilities of AB2 molecules are listed and compared with those expected from their structural formulas.

For the purpose of calculating the bonding energies of sodium and potassium ions in relation to the electric charge of soils,cation activities of the suspension in equilibrium with various types of soils or clays carrying different electric charge were measured with glass electrode.It was found that for the same soil type the bonding energy was a func- tion of the relative proportion of the clay concentration to the total concentration of cations in the system.The bonding energy of a lateritic soil was changed when the soil particles were coated with a layer of ferric oxides so as to alter their electric charge. Changes of bonding energy were also found when the cation-exchange capacity of a ben- tonite clay was decreased by thermal treatment.With respect to the soil type,it was shown that the bonding energies of the yellowish brown earth were almost double that of the lateritic soil.The pH of the medium affected the bonding energy markedly, even for the bentonite clay or cation-exchange resin with little or no variable electric charge. Evidences seem to favour the assumption that at lower pH the competition of aluminum and hydrogen ions for exchange sites is one of the important factors in causing the decrease of the bonding energy of alkali metal ions.It was suggested that Coulomb's force is a decisive factor in inducing the interaction between the cations and the electric charge of soil particles,and in this respect the local electric field strength on clay particles seem to be more important than the mean volume charge density of the whole system.
