In this paper, we calculated the perturbation-kinetic energy budget for two monsoon depressions over the South China Sea which occurred in 1979, by using FGGE- ⅢB data and the equation of the perturbation-kinetic energy in a quasi-Lagrange coordinate over a limited area. The results show that the perturbation-kinetic energy in the process of the development of the monsoon depressions over the South China Sea comes mainly from the work done by the pressure gradient force, due to the ageostrophic effect, and the horizontal flux convergence of the perturbation-kinetic energy. The pressure work is a dominant factor to the development of the depressions. The baroclinic energy conversion favors increase of the kinetic energy of the depressions, but its contribution is very small. The perturbation-kinetic energy is converted into the mean kinetic energy through barotropic energy conversion process.
