Experiments n the progenies of hybrids (high-proline-prducing variant × ther two varieties of rice, W6154s and Nanjing 11) showed that the characteristic of high proline cntent was hereditary (Fig. 1, Table 4 ). Under saline stress the germination rate of the hybrid seeds of the variant was markedly higher than that of the riginal tyPe and another parent (Nanjing 11 ) (Fig. 2 ),and the seedling growth also better (Tables 5, 6 ). It is showed that the increased salt tolerance of high-prolineproducing variant was inherituble(Table 7 ).

Of 60 marker loci, only onemarker locus RG13 on chromosome 5, which associated significantly with salt tolerance was detected and this locusexplained 11. 6 % of the observed phenotypic variance for SD. Among 59 pairs of loci between RG13 and all other 59 marker loci, significant epistatic interactions were detected inthree pairs which were RG13 and RG104 on chromosome 3 (P= 0. 0004), RG13 and RG143 on chromosome 4 (P= 0. 0028) , RG13 and RG716 on chromosome 6 (P = 0. 0063). The interactions between RG13 allele fromTesanai 2 and RG104 or RG143 from CB significantly increased salt tolerance level. The interaction between RG13and RG716 alleies from Tesanai 2 also increased tolerance level. These gene interactions provided clear genetic evidence of transgression.
