In this paper, the method of the motar bar test with opal as reactive aggregate is used to investigate the alkali-aggregate reaction, Many tests have been made. In this paper, the method of the motar bar test with opal as reactive aggregate is used to investigate the alkali-aggregate reaction, Many tests have been made. In these tests the amount of opal used in the aggregate varies from 1% to 40%. The Particle sige of the opal varies from less than 0.06mm to 20mm. The alkali content of the cement varies from 0.37% to 7.5%. To the specimens, in which the alkali expansion might occur, different kinds of usually used active admixtures were added, and the effectiveness in preventing the reaction was also studied.Having analysed the phenomena observed during these tests, the author comes to the conclusion that the main cause of alkali expansion is due to the reaction of alkali with active SiO_2 and with their product. Such a reaction Produces complex alkali silicate which will imbibe more water and, consequently, its volume is increased. The alkali expansion of the concrete is essentially due to the volume expansion of the reaction product. The necessary condifi for the alkali expansion and the cause in Preventing expansion by adding active admixture were also discussed.Further—more the author suggests that not only the active SiO_2 in the aggregates but also that of the admixtures should be considered in the estimation of alkali expansion.

There are two manifestations of the effect, i.e., the inter-polarization of Fe_t~(3+) in tetrahedra and the outer-polarization of Fe_o~(3+) in octahedra to the glass hetwork.

通过对基础玻璃网络连结程度不同的三个高铁碱硅酸盐玻璃体系进行了穆斯堡尔研究,证明其中Fe~(3+)离子对周围氧离子存在较强的集聚作用。这种作用表现在两个方面,即四面体中的Fe_t~(3+)对玻璃网络骨架的内极化和八面体中的Fe_0~(3+)对网络骨架的外极化。
