Six new hydrated rare earth dichloroacetates, Ln(CHCl_2COO)_3·nH_2O(n=2, Ln=La,Ce, Nd;n=1.5, Ln=Sm; n=1.25, Ln=Eu; n=1, Ln=Gd) have been synthesized and characterized by chemical analysis, thermogravimetry and dehydration over P_2O_5. Six new hydrated rare earth dichloroacetates, Ln(CHCl_2COO)_3·nH_2O(n=2, Ln=La,Ce, Nd;n=1.5, Ln=Sm; n=1.25, Ln=Eu; n=1, Ln=Gd) have been synthesized and characterized by chemical analysis, thermogravimetry and dehydration over P_2O_5. The mechanism of thermal decomposition studied by DTA-TG-DTG techniques, chemical analysis and IR show that the thermal decomposition of rare earth dichloro-acetate hydrates take place, from room temperature to 600℃ range, through three major steps,viz. the hydrated salts dehydrate and are then decomposed to intermediates, Ln_2(OH)-Cl_5·3H_2O[Eu salt to Eu_2(OH)Cl_5.2H_2O], which are further decomposed to yield the rare earth oxychlorides, LnOCl (Ce salt to CeO_2). The double-double effects in the lanthanide series have been observed.
