The displacement of the slit images of the rays passing through the two halves of the solution prism was magnified by a lens of long focal length. To reduce the width of the image, a pair of double slits were set before...

The differential refractometer described here was designed on the principle of light refraction at two liquid interfaces. A beam of monochromatic light (436 or 546 mμ)passing through a hollow glass cell of square cross-section filled with solution and immersed in the solvent was refracted. The displacement of the slit images of the rays passing through the two halves of the solution prism was magnified by a lens of long focal length. To reduce the width of the image, a pair of double slits were set before the lens. Three intensive interference fringes were obtained. The distance between the two images was then accurately deter-mined by a reading microscope. The refractometer has a sensitivity of △n=2.5×10~(-6). dn/dc data for 7 polymer-solvent or solute-solvent systems are given. For successful measurement, attention is called to the following remarks: (1) Due to large values of dn/dc for organic solvents, the temperature difference and fluctuation between the solution cell and the solvent cell should not exceed 0.005℃. (2) The cell should be so designed as to avoid distilling of solvent into the solution which causes continuous decrease of the concentration of the solution. (3) Aqueous solution of sucrose is preferred as standard solution for the calibration of the apparatus.

In this paper various factors influencing the image quality of plane grating spectrometer are discussed in detail. By means of vector elgebra a general formula is given for the form of the spectral lines in relation to the form of the entrance slit. A formula describing the angular dispersion of the spectral line resulting from a circular slit is also given. In this paper various factors influencing the image quality of plane grating spectrometer are discussed in detail. By means of vector elgebra a general formula is given for the form of the spectral lines in relation to the form of the entrance slit. A formula describing the angular dispersion of the spectral line resulting from a circular slit is also given. Investigation on the optical performance of the Ebert-Fastie grating spectrometer shows that among various residual optical aberrations, due to unsymmetrical disposition of the incident and diffracting beams with respect to the grating surface, coma is the most serious image defect. This can however be corrected by changing the focal length of one of its reflecting mirrors and placing it at a definite distance from the other mirror. It is also shown that residual aberrations can be well eliminated by placing an aspherical correcting plate near the grating surface. By the latter means there is the potentiality of greatly improving the performance of the instrument; either the volume of the instrument may be greatly reduced where shorter focal length optical systems can be used, or much better light gathering capacity can be achieved without sacrificing its monochrometicity when the spectrometer is used as a monochrometor.

195 photographic plates were obtained with a Ross Camera of aperture 10 cm,and focal length 80 cm.The range of light-Variation of 39 stars of various types are estimated by means of the “Blazhko-Nijland” method.The results of measurement are given in Table 2.
