Two concret examples have been calculated, i.e. i) an isotropic elastic layer having the depth h under rectangular uniform pressure; ii) two-layer soil under the same uniform pressure. The special case due to a concentrated load in the first example we obtain the same result as appeared in the reference[6]and the second example, by using the method of numerical calculation, the result of maximum stress on the rigid rock base is obtained about 4% than that of the reference[6].

In the present paper the experiments on the elastic stability of thin cylindrical shells loaded in combined axial compression and internal pressure are presented. The experimental results obtained have been analyzed. In this paper the five nonlinear equations derived by Thielemann [ 8 , 9 ] are solved by the method similar to that used by Kempner [3 ]. The numerical results are in good agreement with the results of Kempner and Thielemann. In general cases, the critical values of thin cylindrical shells under combined axial and radial loads can also be found by solving the system of the five nonlinear equations mentioned above. The critical stress curve has been plotted in prediction, and it will have to be verified in future theoretical and experimental work.
