The first Chinese experimental meteorological satellite FY-1 was launched on 7 Sept. 1988. The main objectives of FY-1 are: testing and examining the space technology used for this satellite and the ground manipulation as well as the application of this satellite The orbit of this satellite is near circular with an altitude of 900 km and inclination of 99°. The period is 102 min. It rotates around the Earth 14 cycles every day. The spacecraft is researched and developed in China independently and composed of domestic materials and components. It comprises 7 main subsystems, namely the structure power supply, thermal control, attitude control, scanning radiometer and cosmic ray monitor, picture transmission and T.T. & C. Its mass is 750 kg. The main body is 1.2m×1.4m×1.4m in size and with deployable solar panels connected to the left and right side. The length of the spacecraft is 8.6 m and the height 1.76 m. The power subsystem has 6 panels covered with 14, 256 silicon cells of 2cm×2cm in size. The three axes attitude control subsystem turns the satellite toward the earth while in the attitude acquisition phase and then keeps the satellite always pointing to the subpoint of the track. The visible and infrared scanning radiometer has 5 channels and presents the output signal with 1.1 km ground resolution of digital incagery on the subpoint and 4.0 km average resolution of analog incagery on the coveraged ground surface. The picture transmission subsysteon comprises APT, HRPT and playback transmissions. High-quality pictures are received on the ground stations.
