The analysis of stability of the arch dam abutments is important and complicated. In this paper a study is presented on the stability of a high arch dam and its abutments by geomechanical model test, allowing for the interaction of the dam and the treated abutments. The characteristics of test, some problems in model design, the safety factor and the mechanism of rupture of the dam and abutments are also described.

In this paper the stress analysis of a high arch dam together with its complex foundation by using photoelastic study of a three-dimensional model is presented. Some problems are described briefly such as casting combined model and loading analogy on it. The performance of the dam and the stress distribution in the dam under hydrostatic water load and silt pressure have been analyzed. Besides, the effects of variation in elastic modulus of foundation, asymmetry of the elastic moduli and existence of low modulus zones in the foundation on the stress in the dam are also disrcussed.

非均质地基上高拱坝应力分析是目前坝工设计中的一个重要而又复杂的问题。本文介绍了国內某大型重力拱坝光弹性整体模型试验研究实例,其中包括变弹模组合模型浇制、水砂压荷载模拟及主要试验成果,分析了在水压和泥砂压力作用下非均匀基础上高拱坝的受力特点和工作状态,论述了基础弹模变化和不对称性以及局部低变模区的存在对坝体应力的影响。
