The chip breaking property of cast iron during machining is better. Especially the anti-wear quality is appciably better. The decision to mass produce an in-line 6-cylinder engine crankshaft of this power rating--135 HP at 3000 r. p. m., has been proved to be successful.

An investigation on the abrasive wear resistance of several types of spheroidic-graphite cast iron and the medium-carbon steel has been carried out, and the microstructure of matrix, microhardness and macrohardness of these alloys have been measured. This paper discusses in detail that the irons differ from the medium-carbon steel in the microstructure of matrix, microhardness and macrohardness, and these factors influence their wear resistance. The experiments show that in the as-cast condition the wear resistance of the irons is the same as the medium-carbon steel, or slightly higher, in the normalized condition the wear resistance of the irons is obviously higher than that of the medium-carbon steel, and the wear resistance of the isothermally quenched iron is higher than that of the normalized ones. From the experiments it is concluded that the maohine parts undergoing abrasive wear can be made of spheroidic-graphite cast irons under the normalized or isothermally quenched tratement, and they may replace those medium-carbon steel.

The MnS inclusions become stripe shaped during hot working and disperse in the vicinity of carbide stripes. The amount of MnS inclusions is reduced by the addition of rare earth elements, but is never vanished even if the RE/S ratio is greater than 12. No rare earth elements were detected in the MnS inclusions.

本文用金相、电子探针和化学分析等方法,研究了W_(14)Cr_4VMn(RE)高速钢中的硫化锰夹杂物。发现它是Ⅲ型,分布情况和碳化物有密切关系。加入稀土元素以后,钢中硫化锰的变化情况较复杂:对于含硫0.002%~0.005%的钢,硫化锰的数量几乎未变;对于含硫0.01%~0.013%的钢,硫化锰的数量随钢中稀土含量增加而减少,但直到Ce/S=12时,也未完全消失。根据试验结果分析,硫化锰对高速钢的热塑性不可能产生多大的危害作用。因此,稀土元素对高速钢热塑性的改善,也主要不是由于它改变了钢中硫化锰夹杂物所引起。
