In binocular refractive amblyopia, high and medium hyperopia and myopia in severe and medium amblyopia were significantly more than those in mild amblyopia. In monocular refractive amblyopia, high and medium hyperopia and high myopia in the amblyopic eyes were more than those in the nonamblyopic eyes. The refractive status of binocular esotropic amblyopia had no significant difference in various ages and degrees of amblyopia. There was also no significant difference between the refractive status of the amblyopic and nonamblyopic eyes in monocular esotropic amblyopia. It was considered that refractive amblyopia was closely related to high ametropia and the deviation of the eye might be the main cause of strabismic amblyopia.

Objective:The study was designed to investigate refractive status and its effect on the management of periodic esotropia by surgery.Methods:24 cases of periodic esotropia were refracted using 1% atropine. The angle of strabismus was tested with a prism. Stereopsis was tested with a stereoscope on both strabismus and orthophoria days. The amount for surgical correction depends on the largest angle measured on strabismus days.Results: There was low and medium hyperopia in 23 cases. There was physiological diplopia on strabismus days and binocular stereopis on orthophoria days in all 24 cases. After surgery, the eye's position was corrected in 23 cases. They had normal stereopsis.Conclusion:In order to obtain normal stereopsis, strabismus surgery should be performed during the early signs of periodic esotropia. The post-surgical position of the eyes will not be overcorrected if the correction is based on the largest deviation during periods of strabismus.
