Based on the detailed survey of lesser black poplar (Populus simonii×P. nigra) plantations, the ecological adaptability, growth representation and the effects of site conditions and management practices on the lesser black poplar were studied. The results showed that the lesser black poplar in seedling stage could overwinter in Xiaoxing’an Mountains, and its survival rate was above 90%. The annual growth of 4~10-year-old seedlings in height and DBH were over 0.8 m and 0.55 cm, respectively. The stem analysis of 24-year-old lesser black poplar indicated that current annual increment of DBH in 6~12-year-old seedlings was high, and it showed a declining trend after 20-year-old; in tree height, the current annual increment of 4~14-year-old seedlings was high, and it also showed a downtrend after 16-year-old; in volume, the current annual increment of 10-year-old tree began to increase, and it still increased till 24-year-old. The site conditions influenced the growth representation of lesser black poplar obviously. The hillside, shady hillside and half-shady hillside were more suitable for the growing of lesser black poplar than flat and sunny hillside. The DBH and tree height of 22-year-old trees in hillside were 14% and 15% higher than those in seasonably soil submerging flat, respectively. The frost cleft rates of 11-year-old plantations in sunny hillside and shady hillside were 47%~84% and 5%~10%, respectively; in 22-year-old plantations, they were 70.9% and 13.1%, respectively. The stand density significantly influenced the growth of lesser black poplar. With the forest age increasing, the influence was intensifying. The DBH and tree height of 9-year-old plantations in low stand density were 31% and 6% higher than those in high stand density, respectively, and in 22-year-old plantations, they were 54% and 30%, respectively. The man-induced or nature-induced mixed forest had significantly multiplying effect on the production of lesser black poplar.
