A minimum film thickness formula has been given as Hmin=2.12 (1-0. 984e~(-0.579k)U~(0.595)W~(-0.224) which is suitable for materials of low elastic modulus provided that they are steadily loaded and fully flooded. Since the loads acting on the joints are variables and the squeeze film plays an important role in joint lubrication, a lubrication model of the joint is proposed, which is called "unsteadily loaded elasto-hydrodynamic ubrication." With that model the lubrication of a natural hip joint under the walking state is studied. The results indicate that for about one third of the time the surfaces of a hip joint are subjected to Elasto-Hydrodynamic lubrication; for one third of the time in a state of mixed lubrication and for the rest of the time in a state of boundary lubrication. That means that the lubrication changes with the time.

Abstract At the present,few reports about the relationships between surface structure,function and biomechanical properties of TMJ discs were available.This paper was to investigate the surface micro-structure of the discs of adult health dogs and rhesus monkeys resulting from occlusal trauma on posterior teeth by using stereomicroscopy and scanning electron microscopy;and the stress relaxation properties of dog discs by a soft-tissue uniaxial tensile and stress-relaxation test machine.The relationships between permeability and surface structure of the discs,and the joint lubrication were discussed.The authors considered that the micro-undulated configuration of TMJ discs surface appears to aid in storing synovial fluid gel.increase the area of flowing out/in of the interstitial fluid, decrease the loss of the film of synovial fluid,and compensate the low permeability of TMJ discs,to provide lubrication to the joint.The occlusal trauma from posterior teeth can result in the changes of micro-structure of the disc surface destroying the normal mechanism of joint lubrication.

应用扫描电镜时正常咬合和后牙咬合创伤后成年家大和恒河猴的关节盘进行了表面形态观察,对正常家犬关节盘进行拉伸生物力学试验,并讨论了关节盘的渗透性、表面形态结构与关节润滑的关系.作者认为:关节盘表面微观波纹能储留滑液凝胶,增加间隙液流动面积,阻止液膜流失等作用,补偿了关节盘的低渗透性,从而帮助关节润滑。后牙咬合创伤能引起关节盘表面超微结构的改变,破坏正常润滑机制,加速表面组织的磨损、剥脱。

The lubrication mechanism of natural and artificial human joints was discussed in this paper. The history of joint lubrication research was reviewed briefly. Some key problems in joint lubrication were addressed. The clinical use of results obtained in studies of joint lubrication mechanism was also discussed in the paper.
