Delayed growth and wasting were noticed among 4 goats inoculated with ovine progressive pneumonia virus (OPPV) at 3 to 4 months after inoculation, and one goat developed apparent clinical disease.But the control goat uninoculated grew normally.Viruses could be isolated from the peripheral blood monocytes of all goats inoculated with OPPV at 28 days after inoculation.More severe lesions were found in many organs of one of the four goats inoculated with OPPV by post mortem examinations,and typical interstitial pneumonia,mild encephalitis,and more severe splenitis were also found by histologic examinations.All above results indicate that OPPV can infect goats and is highly pathogenic to goats.So it is possible to cultivate a virulent strain of OPPV by passages of OPPV in goats,and this is a critical step to develop an attenuated OPPV vaccine.

The isolation results show that this is a sensitive method of isolating OPPV. Sheep foetal lung cells can be passaged for forty times, and each subculture can be used to isolate virus, so it is a very practical method of isolating OPPV.
