Experiments were performed on 14volunteers, 7 females and 7 males, atthe age of 18-36 with neutro-occlusionwithout signs or symptoms of neuro-muscular diseases or disorders of thetemporomandibular joint. Their teethwere in good condition. The electromyogram (EMG) ofmasseter (middle part) and temporal(anterior part) muscles was recordedwith concentric needle electrodes duringunilateral mastication of a piece ofchewing gum for 6 times in a trial andthe masticatory side was refered to asthe functioning side while the oppositethe balancing side. In different trialsone and the same muscle was used asthe functioning side (masticatory side)or as the balancing side (contralateralside). The electromyographic analysis andlinear regression showed that the meanvoltage and number of discharge andduration of discharge of EMG recordedin either muscle of the functioning sideare greater than those of the balancingside,but the masticatory cycle time ofEMG recorded on the functioning sideis shorter than that of the balancingside. For instance, in the right massetermuscle, during the right side masticationit was found that the mean values ofthe mean voltage, the discharge number,and the discharge duration of the EMGrecorded on the functioning side were792.8±211.9μV, 39±5 times, and 331.7±28.4 msec respectively, while thoseof the balancing side were 482.7±118.5μV, 32.7±4 times, and 305.1±28.6msec respectively.However, the masti-catory cycle time of the functioningside EMG was 901.5±38.3 msec whichwas shorter than that of the balancingside (903.5±39.6 msec). Under the same conditions, theEMG of masseter (middle part)musclerecorded by concentric needle electrodewas compared with the EMG of thesame muscle recorded simultaneously bybipolar surface electrode at the samesite. The result showed that the abovementioned four parameters of EMGrecorded by concentric needle electrodeswere greater than those of the EMGrecorded by bipolar surface electrode. The possible causes of the resultsand their influential factors werediscussed.
