Concentration of water dimer in saturated water vapor at different temperature and temperature dependence of the concentration of water dimer at certain vapor pressure have been computed using the theory of chemical thermodynamics. The result has been compared with the temperature dependence of water vapor continuum absorption coefficient given by Burch. The comparison shows that the continuum absorption of water vapor in the region of 8-13 μ atmospheric window is mainly due to water dimer.

We have developed a infrared photometer which is suitable for astronomical observations through the millimetric wave band of the atmospheric windows. It consists of a Ge-Ga bolometer operating at 1.0K with a throughput AW= 0.3 cw2sr and a NET= 1mk/Hz1/2 . Two metallic meshes set the windows at about 10cm-1 and 5cm-1. It is sensitive enough to be limited by quantum fluctuations of atmospheric radiation. But also extremely simple to handle.

The long-wave (0-2380 cm -1) cooling rate due to water vapor in the troposphere and the stratosphere has been calculated by a new infrared transmission model in this paper. An exact scheme is used for treating the integration over wave number and the inhomogeneous path in the atmosphere. It is shown that the atmospheric window region (730-1200 cm-1) (mainly water vapor continuum) has a significant contribution to the total cooling near the surface, with 72% at the level of 1 km; the CG approximation for...

An exact scheme is used for treating the integration over wave number and the inhomogeneous path in the atmosphere. It is shown that the atmospheric window region (730-1200 cm-1) (mainly water vapor continuum) has a significant contribution to the total cooling near the surface, with 72% at the level of 1 km; the CG approximation for an inhomogeneous path and the diffusivity factor of 1.66 for diffuse radiation are fairly applicable for calculating the cooling rate due to water vapor, with maximum error of 0.16 K/day and 0.19 K/day, respectively, over entire the troposphere and the stratosphere. In this study, we also examined the influences of the temperature-dependence of the absorption coefficients of water vapor, the upper level cutoff and the integration step for altitude, and substituting a quasi-grey approximation for the exact integration over wave number, on the calculation of infrared cooling rate due to water vapor.
