Chinese scientists have entered the Arctic area twice in the past five years, the latest trip was finished August 1999. The ultra north magnifies scientists curious about the role the icy zone plays in the global climate changes. For quite a long time, it was believed that the tropic and sub-tropic zones were the major forces that impacted the global weather. Findings from researches on the Arctic area have pointed to the pole area as a weather dynamo that has sway over the rest of the world....

Chinese scientists have entered the Arctic area twice in the past five years, the latest trip was finished August 1999. The ultra north magnifies scientists curious about the role the icy zone plays in the global climate changes. For quite a long time, it was believed that the tropic and sub-tropic zones were the major forces that impacted the global weather. Findings from researches on the Arctic area have pointed to the pole area as a weather dynamo that has sway over the rest of the world. This tentative conclusion has generated unprecedented enthusiasm for global investigation into the Arctic. For the time being, the International Arctic Scientific Study Commission has launched 10 key programs into the area. Many countries have organized their own research projects for further knowledge of the mysteries hidden under the icy waters. The Arctic zone attracts many scientific expeditions every year. Icebreakers, submarines, planes, helicopters, satellite tracking buoys, airborne remote telesensing, and manned stations in the Arctic areas are all used to monitor changes in the pole area and discover keys to various questions.July and August of 1999 saw China' s Snow Dragon Scientific Marine Study Ship sail into the icy ocean for another large-scale scientific research. The research means a lot to China. The first thing was to know more about the sea there. Weather in China is affected by many factors from the eastern surrounding seas. The chilly current that courses from the Bering Sea is one of the most essential factors. It influences the weather in China. Another key part of the research project on this trip was to explore the fishery resources in the Bering Sea. The rich mineral resources provide rich food for fish in the area. To know more about the Bering will help protect and make the best use of the fishery resources. The scientists all so carried out studies on atmosphere and ice respectively.Working on the sea is no romance. The scientific researchwas hard. Of the forty-two spots on the Bering Sea chosen for the extensive research and data/samples collecting, thirty-one were located in the area where the sea is more than 2000 meters deep. Vessels for samples were almost used up and some less important softwares on the computers used by physicists had to be removed several times in order to find more space for data storage.More than heavy workload was hazards that threatened to engulf lives or destroy tools and instruments. To the scientists, the most unforgettable experience of the danger from the Bering occurred on August 7,1999 when they were carrying out their research operations at a spot named P5. The sea at this spot is 2700 meters deep. The ice made designed operations almost impossible. Scientists struggled against floating ice to get back their deepwater instruments and samples.The scientific trip in 1999 to the North Pole area is only the first step for China. China needs more scientific expeditions to know more about the Arctic Zone.
